Lingkod Timog conducts charitable, educational, cultural, medical and life enrichment activities to needy areas in the Philippines. We strive to alleviate poverty while strengthening relations between the Philippines and the United States.



HISTORY:

Lingkod Timog was founded by Irene Sabban and Cecilia Heredia, two Philippine naval officer wives with the humble desire to provide service to their impoverished Filipino brothers and sisters. "With their gifts of beauty and grace they decided to shed their light to others in God's name." Irene recognized that the poor in Zamboanga needed urgent medical attention. Because many of them happen to be Muslims, they are discriminated upon because of their religious beliefs, particularly in an age of global terrorism. However, they are innocent victims trapped in a dangerous region of the Philippines with little access to aid. Knowing this, Irene recruited the help of the Philippine Marines, and her friend Cecilia Heredia.



The marines provided safety for the medical missions, and Cecilia brought in other non-profit volunteers from the United States. In addition, they found support from the US Embassy, Philippine Navy, local town officials, schools, radio stations, and hospitals. The 2005 mission was a success and they were able to treat 1,000 people. Irene and Cecilia recognized that the Zamboanguenos, in addition to numerous other Filipinos, constantly need urgent medical aid and services. They formally started Lingkod Timog in 2006 as a U.S. non-profit 501(c)3 organization with an operating branch in the Philippines. Their future plans include fundraisers and annual missions to Zamboanga and other parts of Mindanao. In addition, they plan to provide aid to the Payatas trash dump victims in Manila.
